Detroit, is where musical talent ran strong and free. Everyone was singing and harmonizing, everyone was playing piano and guitar. Aretha came out of this world, but she also came out of another far-off magical world none of us really understood. She came from a distant musical planet where children are born with their gifts fully formed.
This month’s selection is a bit of a Cook’s tour of the world and where better place to start than Detroit – the metaphorical centre of the musical world.
The city of Detroit is portrayed as a harsh, violent and dark place. However it also has oases of beauty, colour and reflection, none more so than the area of Heidelberg.

Wandering around the downtown district of Detroit I came across a huge black metal sculpture called ‘The Fist’.
