I was saddened to hear of the death of one of my favourite jazz pianists, Horace Silver.

He played with some of the jazz greats: Miles Davis, Joe Henderson, Art Blakey and Hank Mobley, to name just a few. But it was as a band leader he came into his own, recording some beautiful albums for Blue Note.

Rather than wax lyrical about his musical genius, far better to let his music do the talking. This is a 1968 recording of Song for my Father.

• Horace Tavares Silver, pianist and composer. Born 2 September 1928, died 18 June 2014.
